We are writing to inform you about the recent announcement regarding the expansion of the Solo Traveller Scheme to include Xi'an and Qingdao. Starting from March 6, residents from these two mainland Chinese cities can apply for travel endorsement to visit Hong Kong.
According to news reports, tourists from cities in Heilongjiang province, such as Harbin, may be included in the solo traveller scheme in the next phase. This possible expansion presents further opportunities for our hotel industry and the overall hospitality and tourism sectors in Hong Kong.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mr John Lee, has emphasized the positive impact of tourism on our city's economy. He stated that for every 1.5 million tourists, Hong Kong's GDP receives a 0.1 per cent boost. In light of this, the authorities are committed to ensuring that Hong Kong is well-equipped with sufficient accommodation and facilities to cater to the increasing number of visitors.
The Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners welcomes this scheme expansion wholeheartedly. It will undoubtedly result in more business opportunities for our members and boost the overall tourism sector in our city.
In recent interviews with the media, I have highlighted the importance of efficient tourism promotion that balances economic benefits with residents' well-being. We share this sentiment and believe that finding the right approach to maximize the benefits of tourism without negatively impacting the daily lives of Hong Kong residents is also important. The next primary focus is planning and coordinating future cultural, sports, tourism, and conference events in Hong Kong, and with other nearby GBA cities. Tourist from second- and third-tier mainland cities have very high purchasing power. To attract more tourists staying overnight, it would definitely be good to allow more visitors from cities more than an hour away to come to Hong Kong.
In the coming months, the Federation will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to address these challenges and develop effective strategies for tourism promotion. We encourage our members to provide any suggestions or insights that can contribute to this endeavor.
We are optimistic about the government’s support and the opportunities it brings to our industry. Let us seize this moment to showcase the best of Hong Kong's hospitality and provide unforgettable experiences to our visitors.
Thank you for your continued support, and we will keep you updated on any further developments.
