Federation welcomes to the Government's Latest Announcement to shelve the Waste Charging Scheme

I am writing to inform you about the announcement made by the government regarding the implementation of the citywide waste charging scheme.  On May 27th, Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk addressed the Legislative Council and disclosed that the scheme, which was originally planned to commence on August 1st, will not be implemented as scheduled.

The government has taken this decision due to significant concerns expressed by residents regarding the pay-as-you-throw scheme. Various surveys have highlighted these concerns, including the limited coverage of recycling facilities and the inadequate state of the city's existing recycling infrastructure.

The government also acknowledged that the scheme has placed increased workload and pressure on front line workers. He also mentioned that Hong Kong's economic recovery has not met expectations, and the implementation of the waste charging scheme could have adverse effects on businesses.

It is important to note that Cheuk clarified the misconception that the government's aim with the waste charging scheme was to generate additional revenue. He emphasized that the primary objective of the scheme was to improve waste management practices in Hong Kong.

The Federation welcomes this latest announcement
