Hong Kong International Airport – Operational Milestones and Strategic Developments

The Federation recently visited Hong Kong International Airport (“HKIA”), including Terminal 2 and related facilities, to receive an update on the airport’s latest operational performance and strategic developments. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Hon Perry Yiu for arranging and facilitating this meaningful visit.

Full operation of the Three‑Runway System

This year marks the first anniversary of the full operation of the Three‑Runway System, a major milestone that has significantly strengthened Hong Kong’s aviation capacity. The enhanced infrastructure has supported steady growth in air traffic and reinforced Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub.

In 2025, HKIA handled approximately 61 million passengers, representing a 15% year-on-year increase, while aircraft movements rose to 394,730, up 8.7% compared with the previous year. Passenger throughput during the Christmas and New Year peak period was particularly encouraging. In December alone, eight days recorded daily traffic exceeding 200,000 passengers. Both inbound visitor arrivals and transit/transfer passengers achieved double‑digit growth, with especially strong increases on routes connecting Mainland China, Southeast Asia and North America — key source markets for Hong Kong’s hotel industry.

80 new routes and additional frequencies

The airport is also strengthening its international connectivity. Over the past year, more than 80 new routes and additional frequencies were introduced, further enhancing Hong Kong’s global aviation network. Supported by new bilateral air services agreements, HKIA remains firmly positioned as a leading international aviation hub.

Terminal 2 is being progressively brought back into service. The cross-boundary coach hall commenced operations in September 2025, offering convenient one-stop connections within the Greater Bay Area. The reopening of the departure hall, including self-service baggage and check-in facilities, is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026. Upon full commissioning, Terminal 2 will significantly enhance passenger handling capacity and overall operational efficiency.

Infrastructure development around the airport continues to advance. Automated car parks for transfer and visiting passengers are being introduced in phases, incorporating smart parking technology to improve convenience and efficiency. The Sky Corridor, Hong Kong’s first autonomous public transport system, is expected to commence operation in 2026, directly linking the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port with Airport Island. Its future extension to Tung Chung town centre will further strengthen landside connectivity.

The Federation will continue to monitor aviation and tourism trends closely and engage with stakeholders to support the sustainable growth and competitiveness of Hong Kong’s hotel industry.
